The new leader of Hamas, Yehiyeh Sinwar, is known as a hard line figure within the Hamas militant movement. His internal election will replace Khahlid Mashal despite Ismail Haniyeh being slated to take over leadership. Sinwar was one of the most radical of the senior leadership released from prison in the Gilad Shalit prisoner swap in 2011. Upon his election, he called for increase kidnappings of Israeli Defense Forces soldiers to bring about the release of more imprisoned Palestinians. He comes from a family of radical fighters, is extremely disciplined, and mainly has distanced himself from the media, which is why he is less known in Israel and around the world. His election came as a surprise to many.
