Brief Overview of Operation Protective Edge

“Operation Protective Edge,” or Tzuk Eitan (“Strong Cliff”) in Hebrew, refers Israel’s response to the continual assault on its citizens by Palestinian militants from the Hamas-controlled, Gaza Strip. Although tensions continued to escalate between Israelis and Palestinians in recent years, the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers by members of Hamas was the final spark to light the growing powder keg. The boys went missing on June 12, 2014 and Israeli search teams discovered their bodies two weeks later near Hebron on June 30th. Israeli anger over the senseless killing of the three teenagers led to the retaliation against the Palestinians by three Israeli extremists a couple days later. The Israeli extremists kidnapped and brutally murdered a Palestinian teenager in East Jerusalem. Israeli authorities later found the boy’s charred body in the Jerusalem Forest. Even though the Israeli government strongly condemned the violent attack, the event triggered Arab riots throughout Israel.
